The Collection

The Stereograph Archive gathers public domain stereoscopic photographs, the 3D postcards of the nineteenth century, from the great open collections: the Robert N. Dennis Collection at NYPL, the Library of Congress, the Met, the Getty, and the National Archives. Every item is catalogued with its provenance and license, and every record links back to its source.

The Views

Before cinema, the stereoscope was the window on the world: Niagara in flood, Yosemite before the hotels, a war photographed as it happened, the Moon itself in stereo. Browse by collection or series, work the register, or ask the desk to request an item for you.

Measured for Comfort

Old stereo pairs were never perfectly aligned, and misalignment strains the eyes. Every pair here is measured by our rectification process: the halves are registered to a fraction of a percent, and the depth is budgeted against a fixed standard. Views that cannot meet the standard are held back, not shipped.
